SUMMARY:Punch Card Machine Demo
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder about the history of the punchcard? \nThe punchcard exhibit starts with a Jacquard Loom\, one of the earliest uses of punched cards\, which helped to make woven fabric more affordable. Herman Hollerith’s invention of electromechanical processing of cards tabulated data for the 1890 census. The IBM family of punch card machines was used for data processing and record-keeping across many industries and academia. Punched cards were even used for matchmaking at the University of Iowa in 1963! \nCome learn more about this history and punch your own souvenir card on an original IBM 029 to take home during the demo. \nSaturday\, 2 – 4 PM\, free with museum membership or admission. \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Book Club - Apple: The First 50 Years
DESCRIPTION:Book Club – Apple: The First 50 Years by David Pogue \nJoin us on Saturday\, May 16 at 2 PM at Mimms Museum for an engaging discussion of Apple’s history and impact.\nCelebrate five decades of innovation with our Book Club selection\, Apple: The First 50 Years by David Pogue.  Support the museum and pick up your copy of this fabulous book in our gift shop. \nAbout the Book – from applefirst50.com\nOn April 1\, 1976\, two scruffy twentysomethings\, both named Steve\, founded a startup. Their goal: To bring the revolutionary power of computers to everyone. \nOver the next five decades\, Apple reshaped the technology and cultural landscapes\, introducing the public to breakthroughs like the mouse\, laser printing\, CD-ROM\, WiFi\, digital video\, home networking\, touchscreen phones\, and tablets. Steve Jobs’s obsessive eye for detail set the stage for products—Mac\, iMac\, iPod\, iTunes\, iPhone\, iPad\, AirPods\, Apple Watch—that married advanced technology with beauty\, simplicity\, and fine design. \nDeeply researched and lavishly illustrated in color\, Apple: The First 50 Years includes new interviews with 150 key people who made the journey\, including Steve Wozniak\, John Sculley\, Jony Ive\, and many current designers\, engineers\, and executives. The book busts long-held myths; goes backstage for both the titanic successes (450 million iPods\, 700 million iPads\, 2.2 billion iPhones) and the instructive failures (Lisa\, Apple III\, MobileMe); and assesses the forces that challenge Apple’s dominance as it enters its second half century. \nBursting with tales of frenetic all-nighters\, engineering genius\, and creative rebellion\, this book is a true testament to Apple’s unique and innovative vision\, and a must read for anyone whose life Apple has touched.  – applefirst50.com \n
